DET NSW BYOD Student Laptop Requirements
NSW Department of Education BYOD laptops must be Windows 11 or macOS 10.14+ (or newer) laptops with at least 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD storage, and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, plus other hardware and software criteria
Core hardware requirements:
Most NSW public high schools require:
- Type: Laptop or 2‑in‑1 laptop (Windows 11 or macOS 10.14+).
Chromebooks, iPads, and Android tablets are generally not accepted for full BYOD access - Screen: Minimum 13 inches, Full HD (1920×1080) resolution
- Processor: Intel i5/ Ryzen 5 or equivalent CPU (no ARM/Snapdragon)
- Memory: Minimum 8 GB RAM(16 GB recommended)
- Storage: Minimum 256 GB SSD Storage
- Connectivity: Dual‑band Wi‑Fi (802.11ac or newer; 5 GHz only)
- Audio/Video: Headset/microphone ports (AUX or USB‑C)
- Battery life: Minimum 6–8 hours depending on school
- Weight: Under ~1.5–1.6 kg
- Keyboard: Full QWERTY for touch‑typing
Software requirements:
- OS: Windows 11 (latest updates) or macOS 10.14+
- Licences: Legal, licensed OS ; Microsoft 365 Education, Adobe apps and Google Workspace for Education is provided via school login
- Admin rights: Required initially for device registration and some app installs; may be removed later
- Updates: Keep OS and software current
Other key points:
- No cellular data embedded in the device
- Protective case and insurance recommended
- School Wi‑Fi only at school; no personal data breaches allowed
