Creative Arts

In Creative Arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.

Season of Performing Arts (SOPA)

For over 30 years, our high school has been a vibrant home for the performing arts - where creativity, confidence, and collaboration come to life.

At the heart of this legacy is our annual Season of Performing Arts (SOPA) - a celebration that transforms student creativity into breathtaking productions in Dance, Drama, and Music.

Each year, students develop original works and bring them to life on the professional stage of Glen Street Theatre, gaining real-world experience in the arts and growing in ways that extend far beyond the spotlight. The stage becomes more than a performance space - it becomes a classroom for courage, expression, and transformation.

As a parent, you’ll witness your child discover their voice, their passion, and their potential - whether they're centre stage, behind the scenes, or part of the creative process. Join us in a tradition that has inspired thousands and continues to shape students not just as performers, but as confident, capable young adults ready to shine in any field they choose.

Drama

The study of Drama is founded on distinct ways of understanding the world through exploring, enacting and interpreting real and imagined people, worlds and experiences. All cultures engage in drama and theatre to develop and communicate artistic, critical, sensory and affective meanings.

Students study Drama in Year 7 and can elect to study Drama in Year 9 through to the HSC.

Drama Ensembles

Our three drama ensembles train students to explore dramatic styles, theatrical conventions and world practitioners.

Music

Students learning Music listen, perform and compose. They learn about the elements of music comprising rhythm, pitch, dynamics and expression, form and structure, timbre and texture.

Music is compulsory in Years 7 and 8 and is offered as an elective for Years 9 to 12, including Music 1, 2 and Extension in the senior years.

Students also have the opportunity to perform in Season of Performing Arts (SOPA), School Spectacular, and regional music festivals. Various music ensembles are also offered to students at Davidson High School.

Vocal ensembles

We offer two ensembles in vocals:

Students perform mainly contemporary repertoire, including musical theatre. Students have the opportunity to perform at events such as the North Shore Schools Spectacular and Schools Spectacular. They have also performed at nursing homes and at various music evenings.

Band program

We have a successful, established band program at Davidson High School. Students in the band program have the opportunity to perform at the North Shore Schools Spectacular, Sydney Eisteddfod and Northern Sydney Symphonic Wind Ensemble (NSSWE) Spring Festival. In 2017 our concert band won the intermediate category of the Sydney Eisteddfod. There is also an annual band camp held at Camp Kedron.

Concert band

Concert band is open to all students, and we prefer students to have skills equivalent to Grade 3 or above, as well as having a private tutor. Concert band meets once a week for a 90 minute rehearsal on Tuesday afternoons. The band plays both traditional and more contemporary scores. Instruments are available for hire.

Stage band

Stage band is our higher level band that is accessed via audition or invitation. The band performs a range of jazz styles, and are taught the skills of improvisation in performance. Stage band meets once a week for a 90 minute rehearsal on Thursday afternoons.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts includes the fields of art, craft and design, as well as Photography and Digital Media. Learning in and through these fields, students create visual representations that communicate, challenge and express their own and the ideas of others.

At Davidson High School, we have our own kiln and digital media resources. Students experience different forms of art making and  develop perceptual and conceptual understanding, critical reasoning, as well as practical skills through exploring and expanding their understanding.

Visual Arts is compulsory in Years 7 and 8, and is offered as an elective for Years 9 to 10. Photography and Digital Media is also offered as a course in Years 11 and 12.

Art Club

Art Club is a program available to Years 7 and 8. A qualified Visual Arts teacher will guide students as they create a range of artworks, including paintings, prints and sculptures.

This program will run over 10 weeks in Semester 1 and a small fee is required to cover materials. During Term 1, students are invited to provide an expression of interest to join the art club program.

Dance

Dance is expressive movement with purpose and form. Through Dance, students represent, question and celebrate human experience, using the body as the instrument and movement as the medium for personal, social, emotional, spiritual and physical communication.

At Davidson High School, dance is compulsory in Year 7 and is offered as an elective for Years 9 to 12. Students will study contemporary dance, as well as other forms of dance such as musical theatre.

Students in dance have the opportunity to perform in the Season of Performing Arts (SOPA), School Spectacular, and regional dance festivals. In addition to this various dance ensembles and one senior company are also offered.

We offer five ensembles in varying styles:

Entry into each ensemble is by audition.

Our ensembles perform in the Sydney North Dance Festival each year, and select students perform at the Schools Spectacular. Our dance company has been selected to perform at the State Dance Festival three years in a row, an elite showcase of dance across the state! Dance styles range from contemporary to jazz.
