Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

Mathematics classes are structured so as to create the best learning experience and opportunity for advancement within the subject.

Students are given an opportunity to choose a course that best suits their interest and ability so as to maximise their success in the HSC (Higher School Certificate). Students are given the opportunity to move from one course to another, based on their assessment results.

Competitions

  • Australian mathematics competition
  • Australian problem solving mathematics olympiad (APSMO)

Excursions and outings

  • World of maths: various puzzles and activities designed to challenge and motivate students in Year 8
  • Glenrose shopping centre: budgeting, best buys and statistics
  • Olympic park: surveying, aimed at mathematics general courses

Support help desk

The help desk is available every Tuesday and Friday during lunch in room 45. This is a great opportunity for those students wishing to extend their skills, seeking promotions into a higher class and for those who require a little extra help to succeed with the course work. Mr Zouain and other mathematics teachers will be there to help.
